Dr. Jim McFarland, resident of Buena Vista since 2003, died March 13, 2018 in Denver.
He was born March 8, 1937 in Box Elder County, Utah to William Grant McFarland ad Marie Smith McFarland. He married Sonnie McFarland on Sept. 9, 1964 in Los Angeles, Calif. He received a BA in speech at the University of Utah, Master’s in communication from San Francisco State and his Ph.D. in speech communication from Northwestern University.
He received an honorable discharge from the Army with the rank E-6 Sergeant; Army medic/Jungle School in Panama. He was called as a reservist during the Berlin Wall crisis.
He was the founder of Shining Mountains Press (www.shiningmountainspress.com/news-resources), a speech communication professor, founder of Shining Mountains Center, author, teacher, mentor and scout leader.
He received the IBPA Award for Best Parenting Book, “Montessori Parenting: Unveiling the Authentic Self.”
Hobbies included reading, hot springs, hiking, photography, poetry and gardening.
His family motto is, “This I’ll defend!”
He is survived by his wife, Sonnie McFarland, son Christian McFarland and daughter Jeannie McFarland.
A service will be held Monday, March 26 at 10 a.m. at Runyan-Kent Mortuary with interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery at high noon. A reception will follow at 1 p.m. at Mount Princeton Resort Pavillion.
