The Grizzly Fire burning in Glenwood Canyon led the Colorado Department of Transportation to close I-70 just east of Glenwood Springs last week, rerouting traffic on the major interstate down U.S. Highways 24, 285, and 50.

A recreational vehicle caught fire from an overheated engine about 5 p.m. Wednesday and shut down Cottonwood Pass for about five hours, Chaffee County Fire Protection District Chief Robert Bertram said.

Chaffee County Search and Rescue North, with assistance from CCSAR-South, REACH air medical services and Western Mountain Rescue, is searching for a missing Nathrop hiker in the area around the Three Apostles in the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness Area.

CCSAR-N was dispatched Saturday to search for Terry Pann, 60, who was believed to have been hiking alone in the vicinity of the Three Apostles, having taken off from the Lake Ann trailhead near the ghost town of Winfield.

Chaffee County Public Health reported 36 inmates at Buena Vista Correctional Complex tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the county’s numbers up to 124 cases in the last week.

The state prison agency announced Tuesday that a staff member and an inmate at the Buena Vista Correctional Complex have tested positive for COVID-19.

The Department of Corrections, headquartered in Colorado Springs, stated in a news release that “a full prevalence testing program will be implemented at the facility beginning tomorrow.”

The Chaffee County Communications Center received information that a plane was on fire at the Buena Vista Airport at 1:47 p.m., according to a press release issued by Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze.

Jason Luther Willis, 42, was arrested north of Buena Vista Saturday following a slow-speed chase on a low-powered scooter, Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze reported Sunday.

Willis has attempted to elude officers on several occasions, Spezze wrote in an email. As deputies attempted to contact him Saturday, Willis fled on a “low-power scooter.”

Two men and a woman who allegedly took a vehicle at gunpoint in Chaffee County in April are now in Denver facing a federal charge of carjacking.

Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze reported Sunday that a female prisoner being housed within the county detention center has tested positive for COVID-19.

Before admittance to the detention facility, COVID protocol was followed and she was checked for any symptoms of coronavirus. She showed no symptoms, Spezze said.

She is currently in segregation, separated from the rest of the jail population.

During the 2019 Memorial Day weekend DUI enforcement period, law enforcement agencies arrested 323 impaired motorists. Last May alone, there were 16 impairment-related fatalities on Colorado’s roads.

The legal blood-alcohol content  limit in Colorado is 0.05 percent for driving while ability impaired  and 0.08 percent for driving under the influence. First-time DUI offenders can be punished with up to one year in jail, license suspension and thousands of dollars in fines.
