The Buena Vista High School cross country teams competed at the Tri-Peaks League Championships at Monument Valley Park Oct. 4.

The Demons placed third with 99 points and the Lady Demons were fourth with 75.

Cross country team scoring is like golf. The lower score wins. The points are totaled based on the place finish of the team’s top five racers. First place is awarded a zero, second place a one and so forth.

In the girls race the top five BVHS finishers were Mallory Salazar, 6th; Molly McMurry, 10th; Alexis Santopietro, 19th; and Aja Hogan, 24th.

For the boys the top five were: Rosston Sherlock, 8th; Issac Hutchings, 17th; Jake Helmke, 21st; and Israel McDowell, 23rd.

“League was an awesome start of our competitive season,” said coach Julia Fuller. “At this point in the season it is encouraging to be at the point where we get to see all the hard work this team has been putting in together start to pay off.

“We saw numerous best times and personal records this weekend and look forward to more in the weeks ahead.”

The cross country teams thrive on challenge, she said.

“There is a unique thought surrounding the thought of hard work and digging in a little bit deeper with this group. They get excited about it and encourage one another through it all.”

The team has a goal of qualifying for the state meet as a team and if they could do so it would be the third consecutive year for both the boys and girls team to accomplish that.

The state qualifying regional meet will be at Rocky Ford Oct. 18.
