Buena Vista traveled to Tri-Peaks League foe James Irwin for their first game of 2020 and fell short 59-51 in a close contest.

They were at home Jan. 11 to host Florence and picked up a league win 56-46. The Demons are now 4-3 on the year and 1-2 in league play.

At James Irwin the Demons fell behind early and worked hard to battle their way back into the game.

They did manage better offensive production, but turned the ball over 18 times in the first half making it difficult to mount the comeback.

“We had a better second half as we were more under control going to the basket and were able to knock down a few shots,” said Coach Scott Crites.

Buena Vista was down 29-21 at the break and cut the lead to six at the end of the third quarter. They were then outscored 14-12 in the final quarter for the eight-point difference to end the game.

Isaac Bearss led the team in scoring with 14 for the game and Tucker Storms was close behind with ten.

“Their post player was a tough match up for us. He was strong and really aggressive on the offensive glass,” Crites said. “I was proud of our player’s effort and the way they continued to battle to the end. Hopefully we can continue to build on the second half effort moving forward into the other games.”

“We had our best start of the year against Florence and were able to build a 27-7 lead midway through the second quarter,” stated Crites.

Florence had a run late in the second quarter and closed the gap to 29-20 at half.

Buena Vista came back with another run to start the third quarter to push the lead back to 20. The outcome never seemed in doubt from the point as Buena Vista closed it out by 10.

“We played a lot of kids over the two nights as we had sickness run through our lineup,” Crites said. “The younger players came in and did a great job of giving us minutes, especially Max Johnson.”

Bearss once again led the team in scoring with 16 and Storms had 15. Terry Hirsch scored in double figures with 12.

After hosting Battle Mountain in a non-league contest on Wednesday, Jan. 15 the teams will be back on the road at Vanguard on Saturday, Jan. 18. The boy’s varsity will tip it off at 5:30 after the c-team at 2:30 followed by the junior varsity at 4 p.m.
