‘Who you gonna call?’

Posted: Thursday, October 4, 2012 8:00 am

Friday’s emergency responder exercise raised a question that hits close to home. In the event of a hazardous material or other emergency, what would The Chaffee County Times do? How would a weekly newspaper convey timely, breaking and perhaps constantly changing information?

The answer starts with basic newsgathering, getting a reporter on scene and tracking down a verifiable source of information for confirmation. As soon as we confirmed there was a potentially dangerous situation - like Friday’s mock hazardous material spill, we would begin posting breaking news information on our web page, which would become our primary source for information distribution. We would also then begin to incorporate other social media, namely our Chaffee County Times Facebook page and Twitter accounts, to further distribute verified information.
