Michael James “Mike” Canty of Leadville died on Feb. 3, in a Denver hospital a few days short of his 66th birthday on Feb. 12.
He was born in Peoria, Ill., to James Canty and Virginia Elizabeth Heppard.
He graduated from Peoria High School and attended the University of Washington.
On Feb. 9, 1974, he married Shawna S. Deakin, whom he met in high school. The wedding took place in Coupeville, Wash.
The couple had nine children: Jeremie, Athena, Christinia, William, Alexander, Elizabeth, Virginia, Jasen and Terrance Canty.
His grandchildren are Desiree, Chayse, Miah, Benji, Michael, Aiden, Ravyn, Jordan, Dylan, Quentin, Emily and Naomie.
For many years, Canty was assistant manager of Quincy’s in Leadville. He also served 2 years as a member of the city council. He worked the longest in the retail lumber business.
In recent years he enjoyed walking around and checking on the townspeople. He was also active in the Leadville Gunfighters.
His children said that their father taught them everything that they would ever need in order to survive, to dream big, stay strong and never give up no matter what happens in life.
