Donald Frank Kiekel, 81, of Buena Vista died of a heart attack June 21, 2011, while doing what he loved, riding his bicycle in Gunnison with his wife.
He was born July 3, 1929, in Longford, Kan., to Frank and Alta Hamme Kiekel. He had four sisters and one brother.
Mr. Kiekel married Opal Smith March 25, 1948.
He retired from Halliburton at 55 years old after 33 years of service, and he and his wife moved to Buena Vista in August 1985.
Friends and family remember him as a passionate outdoorsman. He was an avid skier - he and his wife skied more than 120 days a year - and an avid bicyclist - he and his wife rode more than 4,000 miles a year.
Mr. Kiekel fished, hunted and cut his own firewood more than 26 years.
People remember him as a gentle, outgoing, generous husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
He was always eager to tell a story or make a new friend. He knew how to fix and make things, and he liked to share his knowledge and skills.
Mr. Kiekel was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Marcine and Shirley, and grandson Troy Deibert.
Survivors include his wife; sisters Bonnie McCune and Mary Jo Young; brother, Bob Kiekel; daughter, Emma Jo (Ed) Deibert and their children, Brian, Francis, Elba, Destiny, Alex, Juan Perez and Jo Anne (Aaron) Ball and their children, Noah, Isaiah, and Anaya; son, Randy Kiekel, and his children, Preston and Crystal.
Viewing was set for June 25, 2011, at Runyan Mortuary in Buena Vista. The funeral service was set to follow at the mortuary.
Interment was in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Buena Vista.
