Digital bookmobile visits BV

A digital bookmobile visited Buena Vista Public Library, 131 Linderman Ave., June 18 to introduce library patrons to digital downloading of library materials. The 74-foot 18-wheel tractor-trailer contains exhibits including interactive computer stations, televisions and a "gadget gallery" with eight portable devices for demonstrations.

The Buena Vista library started offering the downloading service in April to library card holders. The system can be used at no charge 24 hours a day on home computers. Instead of credit card numbers, patrons use their library card numbers to get materials. Thousands of works are available and can be used on many devices. OverDrive, Inc., a company based in Cleveland, Ohio, is a digital content distributor and technology provider, and brought the bookmobile to Buena Vista as part of its North American tour. The tour started last August in New York City's Central Park. OverDrive hosts the download site and serves 8,500 libraries worldwide.

"It's designed for any user of any technological skill level," Dan Stasiewski of Cleveland, digital bookmobile tour guide said. Patrons can read or listen to audiobooks, eBooks, music and video using a computer, or transfer materials to mobile devices (MP3 players). Many titles can be burned to CD - depending on publisher permissions - and titles expire when the lending period is over.

Library director Gail Nottingham said the bookmobile visit gave people an opportunity to get hands-on instruction in how to use the system. Stasiewski said turnout for the demonstrations was "spectacular" and that 91 people had visited by early afternoon.
