Before the Buena Vista Board of Trustees meets next Tuesday, it will host a work session to hear from Scott Embree, the owner of Ascend Cannabis Company, about his perspective on opening up BV to recreational marijuana sales.
Embree requested an audience with the board in October to present on recreational sales. Scheduled at 6 p.m., immediately before the board’s official Tuesday meeting, trustees cannot take any action or votes during the work session, but the presentation may spark up discussion about bringing the issue back in front of voters in town.
The board last brought the recreational sales question before voters in 2016, and voters rejected the measure with 61.2 percent of voters casting “No” ballots.
While the board in 2016 chose to put the issue on the ballot, it could in 2019 allow recreational sales in town by a resolution voted on among the trustees.
The question may also make its way onto the ballot through a petition process by citizens.
If the town wants to create a specific tax or fee on marijuana, additional to those collected by the state, then it would be required to put that question on the ballot, per the Taxpayer Bill of Rights.
During the official meeting later that evening, trustees will continue discussing the 2020 town budget and will conduct its annual review of the Three Mile Plan, a survey of the area surrounding town limits that looks ahead to the potential for annexation.
