The season of giving has returned, and with it the charitable program of gathering, preparing and distributing gifts for children by the Buena Vista High School student council.
Formerly known as Toys for Tots, the student council continues its traditional program under the name Toys for Tikes this year.
The program itself is the same as it has been with only a name adjustment due to it running locally rather than under the national Toys for Tots campaign, explains Sarah Flowers, BVHS teacher and head of student council.
Both toy and monetary donations will be accepted all the way up to Christmas; however, the student council hopes to have the majority of donations much sooner to have the program wrapped up by Dec. 9. As done before, some donations will be deferred to next year.
“We seem to be on track this year as far as donations go, but we need to bring in about $3K more to be sure we have a successful year,” Flowers says.
Last year, the program provided gifts for about 150 children in Buena Vista. This year, the student council is aiming for that same number, Flowers adds.
Toys for Tikes referrals are made from The Grove Preschool at Little APES and Avery-Parsons Elementary School based on their screening process and assessments.
Student council then follows up with families, gathering needs and wishes and prioritizing boots and coats, doing their best to ensure each child receives at least one gift he or she will love.
“The student council kids also shop, wrap and coordinate delivery. They put hundreds of hours of manpower into the Toys for Tikes campaign, and it’s one of their favorite things to do every year,” Flowers says.
Donations may be brought to the high school or mailed there at Toys for Tikes or Sarah Flowers, PO Box 2027, Buena Vista, CO 81211.
