Stream explorers

A recent Stream Explorers team gets ready to discover secrets in the Arkansas River.

GARNA and Collegiate Peaks Chapter of Trout Unlimited are teaming up for another year of Stream Explorers to connect kids to the river in their backyard.

This 4-day program is free and open to middle school youth who will be entering 5th through 8th grade.

Participants will discover the secret lives of creatures that live in the river, perform aquatic behavior experiments, gain experience with fly casting and learn to tie their own flies.

Students who complete all four sessions will receive a Trout Unlimited youth membership. Students will have the option of completing four activities during or after camp such as service or a reflection to receive a free fly rod and reel valued at $200.

The dates are May 30, May 31, June 3 and June 4 from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The last session is from 9 a.m.–2 p.m.

Sessions will take place at the Buena Vista Community Center, and on the last Friday, shuttle transportation will be provided to a fishing location.

The program is free but registration is required by May 28. Register online at garna.org or call 719-539-5106.

This program is sponsored by Trout Unlimited, Freeport McMoRan and GARNA members, with support from Buena Vista Recreation, Rocky Mountain Outdoor Center, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
