The Buena Vista High School golf team won the varsity portion of the Butch Braswell Golf Tournament in Salida Sept. 12.
Kik Molitor and Chandler Smethers both shot the tournament’s low scores of 80, and Smethers was crowned the champion via a scorecard playoff.
The Demons turned in a team score of 251 with Salida shooting a 278 for second and Florence 350 for third.
The other two varsity competitors on the card were Cole Reavis at 91 and Leyton Chupp at 93. Reavis finished fourth overall and Chupp tied for fifth.
Buena Vista entered four teams in the tournament. The B squad score card included Otto Rizzi at 101, Max Johnson 100, Scott Groy 104 and Brennan Pratt at 104.
The C group was made up of Addison Nichols 109, Walter Molitor 110, Connor Scott 109 and Blake Fauser 118. There were three golfers in the D group. Tyler Stromer 118, J.C. Fox 123 and Karson Diesslin 130.
The team was in fourth place out of ten teams heading into its final Tri-Peaks League meet Sept. 16 in Pueblo.
“We have a chance to move into the third position,” said coach Scott Crites. “Molitor and Smethers are both in the top 12 individually and if they hold their position they will make the all-conference team and Reavis is just out of the top 12 with a chance to move up.”
Playing at the Dos Rios Golf Club in Gunnison Sept. 11, Molitor tied for third with a 79 and Smethers tied for 13th with an 85. Reavis was 25th with a 91 and Chupp 34th with a 94. There were 70 golfers competing.
The team placed fifth out of ten teams in the tourney.
After being in Pueblo on Monday the team will play at Keystone Ranch on Thursday, Sept. 19.
