Cottonwood Pass, June 4, 2019

Cottonwood Pass is plowed to the summit parking lots. On a sunny Tuesday morning, banks of snow formed high walls surrounding the twists through the bowl below the summit.

Taking your dog up to 12,126 feet for a little Tuesday morning backcountry skiing in early June? What’s more Colorado than that?

Chaffee County Commissioner Keith Baker announced Monday that the seasonal closure gates on CR 306 at the Denny Creek trailhead were open and that the road was cleared to the top.

The brand new blacktop asphalt road is dry all the way to the summit parking lot, which is walled in by snowbanks over ten feet high.

Gunnison County has said that their side of Cottonwood Pass will not be open until Aug. 12.

Then the county will resume its half of a federally funded paving project that has closed the through-road between Buena Vista and Gunnison since 2017.
