Mallory Salazar

Buena Vista’s Mallory Salazar leads the pack from the starting line at the Liberty Bell meet in Littleton.

The Buena Vista cross country teams were at Heritage High School in Littleton for the Liberty Bell Meet Sept. 7.

“It was a fast and fun one,” said coach Julia Fuller. “Upon arrival everyone can feel the energy of a big meet like this. It is a naturally fast course and everyone shows up with high expectations.”

Each of the Buena Vista runners ran their best times of the season. Because the team ran on the same course last season, runners had comparative times from a year ago and they were able to see their gains from one year ago.

Chris Hutchings was more than 2 minutes improved from last year and Jack Helmke, Scout McMurry and Mallory Salazar all knocked over a minute off their times.

Salazar finished third among the Division 3 girls group in 20 minutes, 37 seconds, Molly McMurry was ninth in 20:53 and Aja Hogan third best in BV at 85th in 25:02.

Rosston Sherlock was 17th in Division 3 boys group with a 17:39 time, Issac Hutchings was 42nd with 18:27.90 and Jack Helmke 84th with 19:31.60 to lead the Demons.

Buena Vista hosts a home meet Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the Buena Vista River Park course. Action begins at 4 p.m. with middle school races and the high school teams will follow.
