Six Buena Vista wrestlers went undefeated as the team finished runner-up on a tiebreaker when they hosted the Demon Duals on Saturday.
Buena Vista finished number two in the dual team format, going 4-1. They also had a second team entered to fill out the tourney and that team went 2-3.
Team matches on the day for the number one team were against James Irwin 51-30, Basalt 60-6, Bennett 30-43, Severance 43-30 and Eagle Valley 46-30.
“We finished second to Eagle Valley on the tiebreaker even though we beat them in the dual matchup,” said coach Jared Todd. “I was pleased with the way the tourney ran and the way our teams performed. We were a little sloppy at times due to it being our first competition.”
Buena Vista wrestlers that were undefeated on the day included Chris Hutchings 113, Issac Hutchings 120, Hayden Camp 152, Micah Hertrich 160 and Isaiah Romero 195.
“Our wrestlers were motivated by the team’s preseason ranking of third in Class 2A,” said Todd. “We know that is only a number on paper, but it puts a little fire in the belly. I thought our wrestlers went out and competed and laid it on the line.”
The team effort paid off.
“It was a well run tourney because of the many volunteers that helped with setup, take down, clock operation, scoring, and hospitality. A big thank you to all that contributed,” said Todd.
Also participating were Del Norte, Florence, Gunnison, Pagosa Springs, Salida and Severance.
The varsity will travel to the Western Slope in the coming weekend with duals at Cedaredge Friday and then a tourney at Delta on Saturday.
On Friday night the team will dual Meeker at 6 p.m. and then follow with Cedaredge. Action starts at 9 a.m. in Delta on Saturday. The junior varsity wrestlers will be at Salida on Saturday. Wrestling begins at 8:30 a.m.
