Buena Vista blew open a tight game to win big 14-4 at Monte Vista May 7, and then dropped a tight, hard-fought game 4-1 at St. Mary’s May 11.
Isaiah Martinez hit a grand slam to do some big work offensively for the Demons in the win and Owen Hoal came through on the mound last Tuesday at Monte Vista.
It was 5-4 in the sixth when Martinez added the exclamation point. The big blast was one of his four hits in the game. Layton Mitchell also went 2-for-3 in the game.
Hoal pitched the full seven innings, striking out eight while giving up only two walks.
The matchup for the Tri-Peaks League championship was played on the home field of fifth-ranked St. Mary’s Saturday.
“This was a great game, and truly a great opportunity to prep ourselves for regionals this weekend,” said Demons coach Greg Perrin. “We played right with them, but made a couple of mental mistakes that led to two runs. We could not come through with the break-through hit in a couple of spots.”
“Andy threw his best game of the year against a really good team,” stated Perrin.
The Demons will play two non-league games this week as they prepare for regionals and wait to hear their seeding and site.
They were to play a makeup game with Alamosa Tuesday.
The Demons are currently 19 in the RPI ranking for Class 3A.
Coach Perrin does not expect that to change much with this week’s games and anticipates that the team will travel to either Sterling or Peak to Peak for regional play.
The exact matchup and sites will be released on Wednesday, May 15. The brackets will all be posted at www.CHSAAnow once they are set.
