League of Women Voters Chaffee County will host two “Meet the Candidates and Issues” forums to educate residents about the candidates and issues they will be voting on in November.
The first is from 7-9 p.m. Oct. 4 in the Pinon Room at the Buena Vista Community Center, 715 E. Main St. The second will be 7-9 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Salida City Chambers, 448 E. First St.
Colorado House District 60 and Chaffee County Commissioner Districts 1 and 2 candidates have been invited to share their views. Bond issues for Buena Vista and Salida school districts will also be discussed.
“We encourage people to come and listen to the issues. Even if they know the candidates, we encourage them come and hear some of the other positions,” LWVCC service chairwoman Marjie Gray said.
The forums will give each candidate specific amounts of time to discuss their positions, so that each candidate gets the same amount of speaking time. Questions for the candidates will be taken from audience members.
After the timed response part of the forum, residents will have a chance to casually speak with the candidates one-on-one.
“We usually have a big crowd, about 100 people or so,” Gray said.
The forums will be broadcast on BV TV Channel 12 and Salida TV Channel 10. The forums will be replayed at noon and 7 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays leading up to the election.
DVDs of the forums will also be available in Buena Vista and Salida public libraries. Streaming video of the forums will be available at lwvchaffeecounty.org.
The last day to register to vote is Oct. 9. To register to vote, or update current registration, go to govotecolorado.com.
League of Women Voters is a non-partisan community organization committed to educating voters. LWVCC has been hosting the ballot issue forums each year since 2001.
