Students and their parents gathered at the Buena Vista High School cafeteria Sept. 25 for the Fall 2019 Academic Awards, in which 52 students were recognized for their outstanding work in receiving a GPA of 3.8 or higher back in the spring semester.
BVHS teacher and event speaker Jeff Keidel congratulated the students before offering them some advice. With a few of the students in a humorous skit, he pretended to receive an Amazon package containing a toy that required some complicated assembly.
After the laughs, Keidel encouraged both kids and parents to provide their takeaways from the skit.
Students responded with morals such as accepting help from others, reading the directions and accepting times of failure.
Parents backed them up with statements of “have the right tools” and “swallow your ego,” as well as some additional comedic responses.
“There’s going to be times in your life…when it’s going to suck,” Keidel concluded to the students. “Perhaps when that time comes, ask for help. Swallow your pride and ask for help.”
BVHS principal Kevin Denton also offered some words before the students were presented with their academic letters. “These things matter,” he stated, because they are investments into each student’s story.
